FAQ
What's the currency?
Brazilian Real (BRL, R$). Cards are widely accepted in BC and Itapema. ATMs (caixas eletrônicos) are easy to find. Avoid exchanging money at airports — rates are poor.
Do US citizens need a visa?
Yes — US citizens currently need a visa to enter Brazil. Apply at least 2 months before travel. Processing can take time and without a valid visa you won't be allowed to board. Check the Brazilian Consulate website for your region or vfsvisabrazil.com for current requirements and fees.
What's the weather like in January?
Hot and humid — peak summer. Expect 28–34°C (82–93°F) during the day. Evening temperatures are more comfortable (22–26°C). Pack light, breathable clothing and sunscreen.
Do locals speak English?
In tourist areas like BC, some English is spoken, especially in hotels. However, Portuguese is the primary language everywhere. A few basic phrases go a long way — locals genuinely appreciate the effort.
Any health considerations?
No vaccinations are required for Santa Catarina. Standard travel precautions apply. Stay hydrated — the heat is intense in January. Bring your usual medications.
